Every Thursday, after doing her weekly shop and changing her library book, Laura has lunch at the Milford Junction tea room before going to the pictures and then catching the train home to her husband and two children. This particular Thursday, which started in very much the same way as any other, did not end in the usual way. Laura still took the same train home, but everything was suddenly different following a chance encounter with Dr Alec Harvey in the tea room.
She had not been an unhappily married woman, or had she?
The play is centred around the station tea room; working there is Myrtle, slightly prickly but warm hearted, her cheeky young assistant Beryl, in love with Stanley, who also works there selling chocolate on the platforms, and ticket inspector Albert who has a soft spot for Myrtle.
At the start of the play the affair is already over. The story unfolds through Laura’s memory and is imbued with a dream like quality, cleverly interwoven with music and song that are not only relevant to the story but often express the thoughts that are not spoken.
